The Conference will be held at the Ateneo Veneto (please visit web site), located in the centre of Venice near La Fenice Theatre and easily reachable by public transportation (either from St.Mark's Square or from the Sant'Angelo vaporetto stop). The Ateneo Veneto is situated near the Residences chosen for the conference.
Description of the Ateneo Veneto
This palace once hosted the Confraternity of St. Jerome and St. Mary of Justice, more commonly known as "dei picai" (of the hanged) or "della buona morte" (of kind death). The school was suppressed in 1806, and was deprived of most of its works of art. In 1811 the palace was given in concession to the "Società veneta della medicina" (Veneto Region Society for Medicine) that was to become the Ateneo Veneto in 1812.
The ground floor of the building is made up of a spacious Aula Magna or Assembly Hall - acting as Conference Hall and which is embellished by a ceiling of lacunars decorated by Palma il Giovane - and a Meeting Room, whereas the upper floor hosts the Reading Room - formerly the "albergo grande" (large lodgings) of the School, with works by Paolo Veronese and Tintoretto - and finally the Sala Tommaseo (wich can seat up to 70 people) formerly the "small lodgings".
The library is located on the last floor: approximately 35.000 volumes are conserved here, some of which of inestimable and artistic value.
The Aula Magna is used as conference hall and usually seats approximately 200 people at a time.
